Candidate for Aotea/Great Barrier Local Board
I am seeking a second term on the Aotea Great Barrier Local Board to continue my work in the protection of our moana and supporting economic development across the motu. I have been involved in the Hauraki Gulf Forum as the representative for Aotea, I am deputy chair on the Tai Tu Moana steering group, and am currently Acting Chair of Aotea Destination Management steering group. I am keen to continue my work in these areas, as well as supporting the work that the local board does advocating for the island, distributing grants and planning for the future. I feel continuity of our local board is important as is supporting new members through their induction while they get to be familiar with the local board and council procedures. By remaining on the board for this next term I can provide that continuity and support.
If elected I will seek to continue my work in the Aotea Great Barrier marine space through the Hauraki Gulf Forum, Tai Tu Moana and Aotea Local Fisheries Management. I will also continue to support the economic well being of the Island through the Aotea Destination steering group by promoting a sustainable visitor economy. I will continue to support our Trusts and Clubs, particularly in strengthening their capacity to manage the economic pressures currently being experienced.
I have 30 years of operating my own businesses in Australia and New Zealand and experience in dealing with major projects, large companies and bureaucracy. During the last 20 years on Aotea I have learned from my experience here the uniqueness of the island, and the necessity to tailor projects to fit rather than assume what works in Auckland works here. I will bring that experience plus the experience of the last term on the local board to drive change and outcomes that we are seeking.
My top 3 key issues are - Protecting the Hauraki Gulf and the local kaimoana - Encourage economic sustainability for the benefit of all residents - Maintain and improve the infrastructure by planning for the future
From the perspective of Aotea, I will advocate for sealing of remaining unsealed roads. I will continue to explore options to support electric vehicles to combat high fuel prices. I will also look at opportunities that arise with changing technology for electrified public transport on the island. This is dependent on ability to charge public transport vehicles efficiently in our unique environment.
While on Aotea we are self sufficient in the supply of water and disposal of wastewater increasing demands through mandatory inspection schedules are putting financial burdens on residents. This needs to be tailored to the reality of Aotea rather than a schedule imposed from Auckland.

Aotea has high conservation value and highly engaged community working in the protection of biodiversity and pest management. It is important that this work is supported to allow it to continue
Unlike the mainland many of our local services are owned and maintained by clubs and not for profit groups. I will continue to see how we can work with and support these organisations.
Our prosperity on Aotea is heavily entwined with the visitor economy. It is important to encourage sustainable visitor growth to match our capacity, and to encourage visitors who align with the values and ethos of Aotea. A strong visitor economy supports the essential services such as airlines and ferries. I will work with the Aotea Destination group to support the sustainable growth of tourism to Aotea.
Mana whenua are an important part of the fabric of Aotea and as a local board member I will support engagement with them in all areas of our activities.
