Candidate for Henderson-Massey Local Board
Independent
I am Justice of Peace, educated at Auckland University. I am Malaysian Chinese from Hong Kong; married to Audrey with three adult children; Co-founder of Waitakere Ethnic Board, the Lantern Festival and former Waitakere City Cultural Ambassador. I have been serving the community and Local Government for over 24 years. I am committed to working to transparency and sustainability in Council's operation, ensuring that it is more responsive to the core needs of our community. I believe Local Authorities exist only for the convenience of the residents and ratepayers and that rates must be adjusted to an affordable level and be fair to all. I am a former Waitakere City Councillor and current Member of the Henderson-Massey Local Board. I advocate inclusiveness, public transport, more green spaces, sustainable neighbourhoods, and affordable housing. I would like to ensure that the Council is governed by the interests of many, not the few.
I am again standing for election -- as both a Councillor and a Local Board Member -- out of a strong sense of unfinished business and a duty to the community that has elected me repeatedly for 24 years, because they think I do a good job.
24 years of continuous service as an elected representative in West Auckland, demonstrating proven leadership, governance expertise. Extensive experience in local government decision-making, policy development, and stakeholder consultation, built over 24 consecutive years of public service., and strong community engagement.
West Auckland did not get its fair share of auckland Council funding. We need a new system by which Local Boards will have a bigger share of rates funding. Local Boards need a greater voice to say in local affairs. In addition, more opportunities for youths and those out of work with more work experience opportunities across the city. Furthermore, there should be more reliable public transport and arteries to the motorways especially to match recent rapid housing growth.
With the rapid and intensive housing developments in West Auckland, reliable and accessible transport is more critical than ever. I support the City Rail, We must tackle congestion creatively ,with more shared paths, like Te Whau Coastal Pathway, connecting communities.
We need better oversight of Watercare and no building on flood plains. We need to strongly support water quality initiatives including the Rivercare group's work in Te Atatu Peninsula and the Twin Streams Project by EcoMatters.
We need to keep the green spaces to ensure developers maintain our green spaces. Urban design of intensives housing apartments should be in keeping with the nice neighbourhood environment in the local community. Consideration should be given to heritage protection.
There should be more programmes to help protect and restore the Waitakere Ranges including treatment of infected indigenous trees like Kauri. I support the Council's carbon reduction admission plan.
I strongly support communities to be diverse, connected, healthy and inclusive through increase of community grants, meaningful consultation, and strong partnerships with governing bodies. There should be programmes tailored to serve and empower diverse communities "youth, older adults, Maori, Pacific and ethnic communities".
I am committed to building an economically sustainable economy for our children and their children, while keeping rates as low as realistically can be and generating a bigger west Auckland economy. We advocate working with business associations and Invest Auckland to develop our town centres. Arts. sports and cultural programmes can be delivered in partnership with our local community arts and sports organisations. Increased Grants and additional storage facilities for them should be supported.
I uphold the Treaty of Waitangi and support the Maori initiatives through engaging mana whenua, Maori and in collaboration with Te Keter Rukuruku, creating Te Ao Maori activations for whanau that incorporate te reo, tikanga and supporting the area's Purakau ( Maori history).
