Candidate for Henderson-Massey Local Board
As a proud Westie for 23 years, and immigrant from Cape Town South Africa, I’m running for local council to bring diversity and greater representation to our community’s decision-making. I am not seeking notoriety, but believe that the African and other ethnic voices deserve a seat at the table. The challenges facing us including a failing public transport system and lack of safe play spaces for children demand real action and concern. My experience as the owner and volunteer at South Africa NZ Live Radio, volunteer at Waitakere Ethnic board, shows my commitment to connecting and uplifting people. Growing up without a voice under Apartheid taught me to listen to, and advocate for, those not always seen or heard. If elected, I will work to make local government more transparent, accessible, and responsive so everyone, especially the vulnerable, feels supported and empowered in our West Auckland community.
As your representative, I will work to bring our community closer, prioritizing transparency in every decision I make. I'll ensure that everything is transparent and accessible, allowing you to participate in the process. My promise is to put people first, listening, engaging, and acting on your concerns. Together, we will build trust, foster inclusivity, and deliver real results that benefit everyone. Your voice will guide every step I take, making our community stronger and more connected.
Coming from a country with an Apartheid history, effective communication and active listening skills are important so that every voice is heard. Leading with integrity, commitment to transparency and accountability, I will always act openly and honestly. I am a people person, empathetic, and interested in bringing our community together, being inclusive, and valuing diversity of thoughts. My proactive nature, problem-solving skills, and people-first mentality will drive positive, visible change.
My top 3 issue 1. Public Transport 2. Playground spaces for our Tamariki 3. The congestion being coursed by the high density housing
Public Transport in West Auckland is a big issue; it's expensive, inconsistent, and there are not enough bus shelters. There are many roads where cycling is hazardous because of a lack of cycle lanes and narrow roads. In the area I live there are only footpaths on 1 side of the road, which means you have to walk in the road toward on coming traffic, which is dangerous for the tamariki and kaumātua.
I am no water technology specialist, but I believe we are missing a beat, with the amount of roof area and more houses going up, storage tanks should be installed to capture the runoff water, to be used for toilets and watering gardens, if we were clever, and I know the technology exists, we can purify the take water for washing and maybe even shows.
Auckland needs more housing, but expansion must be carefully planned. Too often, decisions are made without considering how they affect current communities and infrastructure. In the North West, major development is happening, yet roads remain limited and inadequate. We must take a holistic approach that integrates residents’ needs, transport, and future growth to ensure our communities stay connected, safe, and resilient for everyone.
Auckland and especially West Auckland, where I have lived since I arrived 23 years ago, has some of the most beautiful vistas and beaches. This needs to be maintained and enhanced for eco-tourism, which can be a huge money earner for West Auckland
To build strong, connected communities, I will actively engage residents in decision-making and promote transparent communication. I will advocate for holistic planning that aligns infrastructure, transport, and services with growth. By supporting local initiatives and investing in accessible facilities and well-being programs, I aim to create safe, inclusive neighborhoods where everyone feels valued and empowered. Collaboration and resilience will be at the heart of my approach.
My vision for economic growth focuses on fostering innovation and strong infrastructure to create opportunities. I will support local businesses through mentorship, fair access to government contracts, and capability-building programs, ensuring inclusion for Māori, Pasifika Ethnic peoples and regional enterprises. I am committed to preserving our cultural heritage by backing festivals, arts, and heritage conservation, working with local communities to strengthen identity and community pride.
To deliver Māori outcomes, I will deepen partnerships with Mana Whenua, embed Māori leadership in governance, and expand funding for health, education, and culture. For the Port of Auckland, I’ll ensure strong safety, transparency, and environmental alignment. I’ll grow the Auckland Future Fund through diverse, sustainable investments to support services. For storm recovery, I’ll back community-led initiatives and integrate holistic well-being models to build resilience and preparedness.
