Kia Ora! Nihao! My name is Susan Diao. I’m a senior lecturer, Justice of the Peace, and long-time community advocate. As a migrant and proud resident of West Auckland, I understand the hopes and challenges of our diverse communities - from hardworking families and small business owners to young people and seniors. With over a decade of experience in education and public service, I’m passionate about improving public transport and infrastructure, supporting schools and youth programmes, promoting cultural inclusion, and strengthening local voices in decision-making. As a mother, educator, and long-term Westie, I’m committed to building a safer, more connected, and inclusive neighbourhood - where every family feels seen, heard, and supported. Let’s work together to help our community thrive - for everyone. Vote for me, my Labour colleagues for Local Board, Waitakere Licensing Trust and Shane Henderson and Jess Rose for Council.
If elected, I will focus on improving local infrastructure, ensuring safer streets, and advocating for more community facilities to support our growing population. I will work to make public transport more accessible, protect our parks and waterways, and support initiatives that foster youth development and cultural inclusion. Most importantly, I will engage regularly with residents to ensure that your voices guide our decisions, so the HMLB truly reflects the community's priorities.
I bring strong governance experience, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of our community’s needs. As a Justice of the Peace, senior lecturer, and active volunteer, I have developed integrity, accountability, and the ability to listen and engage with diverse perspectives. My background in social work and logistics helps me approach challenges with both compassion and strategic thinking, ensuring decisions are practical and community-focused.
1. Better Local Infrastructure – Henderson-Massey is growing fast, and we need safer roads, improved public transport, and well-maintained community facilities to keep up. 2. Stronger Community Support – I want more resources for youth, seniors, and migrant communities, so everyone feels connected and supported. 3. Protecting Our Environment – Clean waterways, healthy parks, and sustainable planning are essential for future generations.
My priority is to create safer, more accessible, and more reliable transport options for everyone in Henderson-Massey. I will advocate for better-maintained roads, improved bus services, and safer cycling and walking paths. We need transport planning that reduces congestion, connects communities, and supports sustainable travel choices to meet the needs of a growing population.
Auckland’s water must be managed sustainably. I support securing reliable supply, upgrading stormwater systems to reduce flooding, and improving wastewater infrastructure to protect our harbours and streams. Clean water is essential for health and the environment, so we must invest in resilient systems and stronger monitoring to ensure safe, high-quality water for future generations.
I support balanced urban development in Auckland that delivers affordable housing, improves infrastructure, and respects our community’s heritage. We need smart growth that upgrades transport and public spaces while protecting green areas and heritage sites. I will advocate for sustainable, inclusive planning that ensures Henderson-Massey remains a great place to live, work, and raise families.
I’m committed to protecting Auckland’s natural spaces by supporting stronger biodiversity initiatives and restoring native habitats in Henderson-Massey. We must improve climate resilience through sustainable water management, increased tree planting, and community-led conservation projects. I will work to ensure our parks and waterways are preserved and enhanced for future generations to enjoy a healthy, vibrant environment.
I will strengthen Henderson-Massey’s community by supporting inclusive programs, improving access to local services, and upgrading community facilities. I’m committed to listening to residents’ needs and fostering partnerships with local groups to boost wellbeing. Together, we can create safe, welcoming spaces that connect people and promote health, education, and social support for all ages and backgrounds.
I envision a vibrant Henderson-Massey with thriving local businesses supported through accessible resources and innovation. I’ll champion initiatives that create jobs and skills development while promoting our rich cultural diversity as a community strength. By celebrating heritage and encouraging cultural events, we can boost tourism and pride, making our area an attractive place to live, work, and grow economically.
I’m committed to delivering meaningful Māori outcomes through partnership and respect, ensuring Te Tiriti principles guide local decisions. I support sustainable management of the Port of Auckland that balances economic benefits with environmental care. I back growing the Auckland Future Fund to invest in our community’s long-term wellbeing and will advocate for effective support in storm recovery to help Henderson-Massey bounce back stronger and more resilient.
