Candidate statement

Kia Ora! Nihao! My name is Susan Diao. I’m a senior lecturer, Justice of the Peace, and long-time community advocate. As a migrant and proud resident of West Auckland, I understand the hopes and challenges of our diverse communities - from hardworking families and small business owners to young people and seniors. With over a decade of experience in education and public service, I’m passionate about improving public transport and infrastructure, supporting schools and youth programmes, promoting cultural inclusion, and strengthening local voices in decision-making. As a mother, educator, and long-term Westie, I’m committed to building a safer, more connected, and inclusive neighbourhood - where every family feels seen, heard, and supported. Let’s work together to help our community thrive - for everyone. Vote for me, my Labour colleagues for Local Board, Waitakere Licensing Trust and Shane Henderson and Jess Rose for Council.

Why I want to be elected

If elected, I will focus on improving local infrastructure, ensuring safer streets, and advocating for more community facilities to support our growing population. I will work to make public transport more accessible, protect our parks and waterways, and support initiatives that foster youth development and cultural inclusion. Most importantly, I will engage regularly with residents to ensure that your voices guide our decisions, so the HMLB truly reflects the community's priorities.

My key skills and qualities

I bring strong governance experience, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of our community’s needs. As a Justice of the Peace, senior lecturer, and active volunteer, I have developed integrity, accountability, and the ability to listen and engage with diverse perspectives. My background in social work and logistics helps me approach challenges with both compassion and strategic thinking, ensuring decisions are practical and community-focused.

My top three key issues

1. Better Local Infrastructure – Henderson-Massey is growing fast, and we need safer roads, improved public transport, and well-maintained community facilities to keep up. 2. Stronger Community Support – I want more resources for youth, seniors, and migrant communities, so everyone feels connected and supported. 3. Protecting Our Environment – Clean waterways, healthy parks, and sustainable planning are essential for future generations.
