I'm Luke Collings, a lifelong Howick resident with strong ties through local schooling and deep connections within the community. This is our home, and I am committed to fostering the prosperity and resilience of our region. I believe local government must adopt forward-thinking, technology-driven strategies to improve transport infrastructure, increase efficiency, and make services more accessible. With my father, David Collings, having served over 27 years in local government, I have gained a deep appreciation for the vital role local boards plays in shaping our community's future. I strongly support returning decision-making powers from Auckland Transport back to elected representatives, ensuring our community's voice guides key transport and infrastructure projects. I bring a fresh, innovative perspective while respecting our diverse cultural and traditional values. My main focus is delivering practical solutions on Rates, Roads, and Rubbish. I would be honored to have your support. Vote for Luke Collings and C&R.
Our community is growing fast—and we need smarter decisions to match. Let’s ensure rates are spent wisely, not wasted on projects like a $287,000 speed bump. Simple fixes—like turning bays or an extra lane—can reduce congestion and make travel easier. As our ward expands, we must demand better planning so infrastructure, services, and amenities keep pace with our needs!
I have a genuine desire to address issues in our local electorate and care about the concerns of others. Educated locally, I’m grateful to my teachers for the strong foundation they provided. I have a keen interest in technology, which is increasingly valuable today. Growing up around my father, who served on the local board much of my life, I have gained a solid understanding of the work involved through observation.
Rates - Well simply put - its your money (constituents). When spending, this should be considered... Does the community really need/want this? Does it serve everyone or a select group? Roads - Do I have to explain? Its a Auckland wide problem. Everything possible must be done to stop build up in areas. Turning bays need to be longer, signage clearer, road markings need to be upkept better especially through intersections. Rubbish - A 2 week collection is a crazy idea. You pay enough rates..
Footpaths must be kept to standard. Good enough that my Grandmother could walk safely on. Public transport options must be made available, but not the main focus. Currently most people use their own personal cars and not enough attention has been paid to the development of the surrounding infrastructure to ensure people can do so comfortably and without significant delay. My priority would be extra driving lanes, more room in turning lanes and focusing on transport ergonomics.
I think water management needs careful consideration into the future. Already I feel we are given water usage warnings far more often than in the past. Water is vital. Like roads, water management needs to be constantly monitored with foresight to the ever increasing population. Water is the most essential human requirement and must be treated as such.
Housing and population is a big concern facing Auckland, as we rapidly grow - so must our urban development. In size and in density and retail/commercial. Care must be taken not to interfere with current resident's lifestyle whilst still expanding the area adequately. While something that must be done, I think over development of the area may be a concern to some. I think the heritage of Howick should be a serious consideration.
The natural environment in New Zealand is probably one of the most iconic and important things to us as a country. And one of the biggest benefits of living here - in my opinion. Its incredibly important to me that, native trees, native wildlife, beaches and waterways are all taken care of. Parks and reserves should stay as they are. Its essential to keep these in the hands of the public and as clean and natural as possible.
Consider holding open meetings between the board and the public to obtain direct feedback and input on specific issues, as well as on broader community concerns. Explore the use of digital platforms, including social media and online tools, to engage public opinion. Enhance communication with constituents by employing technology efficiently, ensuring that online accessibility to resources such as live board meetings is straightforward and user-friendly
Local businesses are always a concern for the local community and will always be supported. Cultural heritage is important to all groups, including people who have come here.
