Candidate statement

Talei is a proud lifelong resident of Māngere, deeply committed to the wellbeing of our community. She currently serves as Operations Manager for a local Trust supporting youth to re-engage with education, training, and employment. With over 30 years of experience in education and training, Talei brings strong leadership, practical skills, and a passion for people. She holds a Master's in Social and Community Leadership, a Bachelor of Education, and a New Zealand Diploma in Business. Talei has served on the Boards of Trustees for Monte Cecilia Catholic School and St Mary MacKillop Catholic School. An active member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church, she lives in Māngere East with her husband and their three adult sons. 'I am ready to serve Māngere with passion, purpose, and the lived knowledge of what our families need to grow, thrive, and belong. Vote for me and the Labour Team for strong community voices.'

Why I want to be elected

If elected to the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board, I will champion opportunities that strengthen our community, support youth into education, training and jobs, and improve access to essential services. I am committed to advocating for safer streets, better transport, vibrant public spaces, and culturally grounded wellbeing initiatives. With over 30 years of community leadership experience, I will work hard to ensure our people are heard, supported, and empowered to thrive.

My key skills and qualities

I bring over 30 years of experience serving our community, supporting youth and families into education, training, and employment. I am a strong listener, collaborator, and advocate who values cultural connection, inclusion, and fairness. My skills in community leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving mean I can work alongside others to achieve positive change. I bring integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of Māngere-Ōtāhuhu.

My top three key issues

My top priorities are ensuring our parks, libraries and pools remain free and well maintained, because they are vital for mental wellbeing and community connection. I am passionate about creating more opportunities for youth and families to thrive through education, training and jobs. I will also focus on safer streets, stronger communities, and ensuring our rates are fair and continue to deliver real value for Māngere-Ōtāhuhu residents.
