Candidate for Manurewa Local Board
I’m running for the Manurewa Local Board because I love this place and our people. I grew up here, built my life here, and I want to speak for those in our community who often go unheard. Manurewa is full of talent, culture, and potential but we also face real challenges. I’m committed to bringing fresh ideas, a youthful perspective, and practical solutions that truly make a difference. This isn’t about politics for me, it’s about people. I want better opportunities for our youth, safer spaces for our families, and more support for those doing it tough. There’s a Samoan saying my late proud Manurewa father left with me: 'Amuia le masina e alu ma toe sau – Lucky is the moon to go and come back.' Our time here isn’t promised, so let’s make the most of it while we can. If not for ourselves, for the future generations.
Not here for the politics. Strictly for the people. I grew up in Manurewa, built my life here, and I understand both its potential and its challenges. If elected, I’ll work to increase digital literacy and open pathways into sustainable careers through opportunities in AI, business, entrepreneurship, and skills development. I’ll make Manurewa the place to be, improving our parks, pools, and leisure centres, boosting health and fitness, and creating safer spaces with better lighting and security.
I bring proven leadership as founder of a lighthouse social enterprise of South Auckland, with experience in governance, strategic planning, and programme delivery. I’ve created jobs, youth programmes, and community initiatives that uplift Pasifika and Māori. Skilled in building partnerships, securing funding, and driving innovation, I know how to turn ideas into action and will bring energy, connection, and accountability to the role.
The REWA Approach Resilient & Empowered: Build real skills, boost digital literacy, and create pathways into sustainable careers through AI, business, and new skills. Welcoming: Make Rewa proud with safe, modern, and accessible facilities, vibrant public spaces, local art, and community events. Active: Expand sports and arts so youth stay engaged, connected, and off the streets through positive programmes and safe spaces.
Many stations lack effective security to deter troublemakers. Staff must be capable, assertive, and focused on public safety. Strong security fosters respect, cleanliness, and community pride. Safe stations make transport welcoming for commuters and event-goers. Adequate shelter at depots/stations reduces stress, illness risk, and discomfort.
Mobilise local groups (e.g. dads in the hood) to clear drains and check on vulnerable families during floods. Encourage communities to regularly clear stormwater drains in flood-prone areas. Ensure vulnerable households have emergency packs with supplies. Create a local skills directory (plumbing, etc.) for quick fixes and reduced water waste. Support local trades to boost the economy and provide trusted services.
Redefine townhouse and subdivision developments so they’re built as homes for families, not just space-fillers. Hold developers accountable for liveable design: privacy, breathing room, and safe play areas for kids. Push back on overcrowded, poorly planned housing that fuels stress and conflict within families and neighbourhoods.
Host community clean-up competition days across Manurewa. Involve schools, businesses, and groups to clean land, waterways, and repaint tagged structures. Make it a fun event with prizes, free food, and activities to boost spirit. Create healthy competition with awards for most rubbish collected, trees planted, or repaints completed. Reward winners with funding for school or community projects.
Increase access to after-hours free or low-cost healthcare for working families. Establish a one-stop community hub with health, social, and support services in one place. Revamp community buildings to keep Manurewa bright, modern, and welcoming. Expand sports and arts programmes to keep youth active, creative, and connected during school and holidays.
Provide real skills and career development that help locals thrive. Boost digital literacy and professional capability across the community. Create pathways into sustainable careers in AI, business, and entrepreneurship. Support local businesses with training, resources, and networks. Celebrate Manurewa’s culture through events, arts, and storytelling. Share local success stories to inspire and uplift others.
Partner with mana whenua and marae to ensure Māori voices lead decision-making. Support Māori-led housing, health, and business initiatives that strengthen whānau. Back storm recovery with local response hubs, emergency packs, and community clean-ups. Ensure the Port of Auckland and Future Fund benefit all Aucklanders, with transparent management and fair returns reinvested locally.
