Deborah MISIUEPA

Candidate for Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board (Tāmaki Subdivision)

Labour

Candidate statement

Tēnā koe. I love Tāmaki-Maungakiekie! It has been my home since the early 1960s when my young parents moved here with their four children. I've spent over a decade in local government, primarily in Community Development and Iwi partnerships, and gained deep insights into the inner workings of the public sector. From there, I moved into senior leadership roles across Tertiary Education, Taamaki Housing, and urban Marae governance. My voluntary mahi and leadership in sport enabled me to support clubs to grow and realise their potential. I believe in building meaningful relationships and bringing people together to achieve success especially through community-led initiatives. With deep local knowledge and lived experience, I'm committed to improving access to resources, equity and local decision-making so council's budget and community amenities truly reflect the aspirations and needs of the diverse communities we serve. Please vote for me and our strong Labour team.

Why I want to be elected

I'll focus on what matters most in these challenging times: having pathways to meaningful work, affordable housing, strong community services, better transport and roads, protecting te taiao, safe public spaces, and support for local businesses. I’ll advocate for community-led initiatives that build lasting capability. I prioritise relationships, integrity, and collaboration to improve the well-being of the communities I serve with the understanding that we can always do better.

My key skills and qualities

I have deep roots in this community, with five decades of lived experience here. Through my mahi and voluntary work, I’ve gained strong governance, leadership, and management skills across local government, sport, marae development, education, and housing. This diverse background equips me with the ability to engage effectively, build community understanding, and support informed decision-making so that whānau can thrive in place. Relationships that help drive outcomes are very important to me.

My top three key issues

My priorities are enabling community wellbeing, ensuring that whānau thrive through better access to community services and opportunities that reflect their needs. I’ll advocate for affordable housing, inclusive education, and development especially in ways that strengthen local identity and social cohesion. With experience in governance and community leadership, I'll bring inclusive, transparent decision-making to ensure that voices unheard help shape decisions that affect them.
