We are lucky to live in the Ōrākei Local Board area; a community built on commitment and connection, surrounded by beautiful natural features. If elected, I will continue to foster strong, collaborative relationships with residents, local groups, and council agencies. I’m committed to growing our proud legacy of developing superb parks, sports grounds, and public spaces, supporting economic development, delivering safer transport infrastructure, and advancing ecological restoration.
I have a diverse skill set; recognised as a leader, an efficient and highly organised person who gets on both with the job and the people I work with. My financial capability is honed by years of co-owing a manufacturing business, I understand the financial realities and attention to detail when managing ratepayer funds and a challenging budget. A strategic planner with experience in community fundraising, I am skilled in financial management, project management, marketing and communications.
Our local board mandate requires both advocacy and action; key priorities include protecting our environment and heritage, delivering safer transport infrastructure, and supporting local communities with high-quality facilities. Cities thrive on good long-term planning, Auckland is facing challenges as we intensify and as infrastructure deficiencies have an increasing impact. We need consistent, capable leadership who can implement a long term vision which meets the needs of our community.
My priorities include advocating for better-connected transport infrastructure that offers viable, safe, and sustainable travel choices, including improved walking and cycling options, as well as reliable and affordable public transport. I will ensure our Local Board Transport Capital Fund is invested wisely in projects that are championed by the community and deliver lasting value to our neighbourhoods. A key priority is advocating for the Gowing Drive connection to Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai.
Local board advocacy for infrastructure that separates sewer and stormwater systems is vital to the health of our environment. The Eastern Isthmus Water Quality Improvement Programme is a coordinated programme led by Healthy Waters and Watercare, aimed at reducing wastewater overflows and improving water quality across the Hobson Bay catchment, the eastern beaches, and the Tāmaki Estuary. I support the current funding mechanism which includes the water quality targeted rate and general rates.
We need to be a resilient and imaginative city, one that embraces new technologies while remaining mindful of our heritage. Well-designed urban environments, with efficient transport systems, quality housing, and functional infrastructure are key to creating places where people want to live, work, and thrive. Planning decisions need to be made by Aucklanders; long-term thinking with local input are essential if we want to build a city we are proud to call home.
We are fortunate to have a network of 123 parks in our area, including 60 recreational reserves, 21 sports parks, and 6 scenic reserves. Our Parks Management Plan sets the direction for the next ten years, recognising the importance of heritage, ecological values, and recreational use. It is essential that we continue to allocate sufficient budget and resource, particularly to our outstanding ecological volunteers, to ensure our parks are well-maintained and protected for future generations.
The Auckland East Community Network is a great example of how we build a strong, connected community. By connecting and supporting local groups, we play a key role in fostering collaboration and community resilience. Through the network, we create opportunities for people to connect, share ideas, and work together, and, where possible, we provide funding and resources to help bring local projects to life.
I am committed to supporting local economic development by backing our small businesses, encouraging innovation, and promoting local shopping, dining, and services. Ensuring our public spaces are welcoming and accessible helps create vibrant, people-friendly environments that support local enterprise. We are fortunate to have two heritage libraries in our area, along with a thriving arts programme which celebrates local talent and reflects our cultural diversity.
Ōrākei is the home of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, who bring their kaitiakitanga, cultural identity and long-standing commitment to the land and people of this area. Their leadership and partnership are essential as we plan for the future, ensuring that our shared spaces, environmental restoration, and community development embrace the unique identity that is Ōrākei.
