Transport is a key priority for all residents of Papakura. As a current Local Board Member I have advocated for off-road shared cycleways and good transport links North and Southbound with Rail and Bus. Due to growth it has been paramount to establish new bus routes using AT local. I have advocated to revive the Greenways Plan which looks at walking routes. Having interconnected walking and cycling links ensures our Papakura community has a well connected area where it's easy to move around.
Our Papakura community is contracted to Veolia and bound by this particular agreement. In this current term I have assisted local residents with Veolia processes due to technology changes which impacted our community significantly.
Due to significant population growth in Papakura, we have seen high density housing impacting residential area. Advocating to the Governing Body is vital to change policy regarding parking and infill housing Please note: Major policies changes sit with Central Government.
In this current term I have advocated for the following: Increased tree canopy cover, support Pest Free initiatives, work with Mana Whenua as Kaitiaki, support Papakura Community Resilience programme and ensure our parks, waterways and harbour remain healthy, accessible and treasured for future generations.
Papakura’s strength is its diversity, Papakura Action Team want connected, active, and healthy communities. Our Papakura council assets are important for our growing community, investing in quality facilities, parks and open spaces to meet the changing needs while supporting cultural, sporting, and arts venues like Hawkins Theatre, Elizabeth Campbell Hall, Papakura Leisure Centre and Te Paataka Koorero o Takaanini Library.
Boosting economic growth in Papakura is always going to be beneficial. Most economic development is held centrally within Auckland Council however promoting the region is key. Advocating for a Local Economic Broker would be helpful to create personalised economic plans for Papakura. An example of this was when 'Fifa' used McLennan Park to deliver training facilities for the Women's World Cup, substantial investment in instructure which will be used by our Papakura community for years to come.
My colleagues and I have been instrumental in developing strong relationships with local Mana Whenua to ensure Māori outcomes are delivered within our community. Some Mana Whenua-led initiatives are Te Koiwi Reserve and Waterways enhancement, Pukekiwiriki Paa Joint Management Committee, Matariki celebrations and funding local Māori-led programmes throughout Papakura. I have personally mentored a Rangatahi through the Tuia Mentoring programme on this current term of council.
