Brent BAILEY

Candidate for Rodney Local Board (Kumeū Subdivision)

Candidate statement

I am a long-term resident of Rodney, first in Waimauku and more recently in Muriwai. In my three terms serving on the Rodney Local Board, I have represented the Kumeu Subdivision and was Board Chair in this last term. I am standing to provide added continuity and institutional knowledge, in what will most likely be a predominantly new board. My daughters went to Waimauku Primary and to Kaipara College where I served on the Board of Trustees. I have two grandchildren. I am an advocate for Public Transport and for a Halt to further Urban Sprawl that adds to the existing long-term lack of infrastructure provision, such as roading capacity, mass transport, and horizontal services like water and wastewater. After three terms, I now have a good understanding of how Council functions and have the communication and personal skills to share this experience with the new Board.

Why I want to be elected

I am standing to provide added continuity and some institutional knowledge in what will most likely be a predominantly new board. Residents and ratepayers feel that Auckland Council is not providing value for money and the most recent rate increases have disproportionately impacted Rodney. Further. we face infrastructure and community facility deficits that have accumulated over decades of largely unplanned growth. Strong advocacy is needed.

My key skills and qualities

I have served three terms on the Rodney Local Board, most recently as Chair, and have a good understanding of how Council works. This can assist me to improve delivery and reduce time to benefit for projects and initiatives that the board wishes to action. I have communications skills and governance experience that should allow the new board to be effective earlier than it would otherwise.

My top three key issues

I am an advocate for Public Transport and for a Halt to further Urban Sprawl that adds to the existing long-term lack of infrastructure provision, such as roading capacity, mass transport, and horizontal services like water and wastewater. Rodney residents really want better value for money from the rates they pay Council and I would like to see less talk and endless consultation, and more just get stuck in and get it done.
