Candidate for Waitākere Ward
Independent
I am Justice of Peace, educated at Auckland University. I am Malaysian Chinese from Hong Kong; married to Audrey with three adult children; Co-founder of Waitakere Ethnic Board, the Lantern Festival and former Waitakere City Cultural Ambassador. I have been serving the community and Local Government for over 24 years. I am committed to working to transparency and sustainability in Council's operation, ensuring that it is more responsive to the core needs of our community. I believe Local Authorities exist only for the convenience of the residents and ratepayers and that rates must be adjusted to an affordable level and be fair to all. I am a former Waitakere City Councillor and current member of the Henderson-Massey Local Board. I advocate inclusiveness, public transport, more green spaces, sustainable neighbourhoods, and affordable housing. I would like to ensure that the Council is governed by the interests of many, not the few.
I am again standing for election -- as both a Councillor and a Local Board Member -- out of a strong sense of unfinished business and a duty to the community that has elected me repeatedly for 24 years, because they think I do a good job.
I have got 24 years of continuous service as an elected member in west Auckland, demonstrating proven leadership, governance expertise, and strong community engagement.
West Auckland did not get its fare share of Auckland Council funding and Local Boards should have greater say and power in decision-making in local affairs. There should also be more opportunities for youths and those out of work with more work experience opportunities across the city. Furthermore there be reliable public transport and more arteries to the motorways especially in view of recent rapid intensive housing development.Transport and infrastructure should match housing growth.
Support the Rail Link. Transport should match housing growth. We must tackle congestion creatively, with more shared paths, like the Te Whau Coastal Pathway, connecting communities.
Better oversight on Watercare and no building on floodplains. We should strongly support quality initiatives such as the Rivercare groups work in Te Atatu Peninsula and the Twin Streams Projects by the EcoMatters.
Rapid intensive housing development has led to traffic congestions. Heritage protection is important.
We should keep the green spaces to ensure developers maintain our green spaces. There should be more environmental programmes to help protect and restore the Waitakere Ranges including improving neighbourhood parks. Projects to treat infected indigenous trees like Kauri should be supported and funded.
Supporting communities to be diverse, connected, healthy and inclusive through community grants programmes, meaningful consultations, and building strong, collaborative partnerships with the governing bodies.
Committed to building an economically sustainable community for our children and their children, while keeping rates as low as they realistically can be and generating a bigger Auckland economy. Tailoring arts and culture programmes could be delivered through our community arts partners to serve diverse communities "youth, older adults, Maori, Pacific and ethnic communities".
I strongly uphold the Treaty of Waitangi and support the Waitangi Day celebration. I strongly advocate the Maori initiatives through engaging mana whenua, Maori and in collaboration with Te Kete Rukuruku, creating Te Ao Maori activations for whanau that incorporate te reo, tikanga and supporting the area's Purakau (Maori history).
