Candidate for Waitematā Local Board
As a long-time urban dweller and community advocate, I am proud to stand for the Waitematā Local Board to help shape inclusive, creative, and thriving neighbourhoods for all who call this place home. Known affectionately as the unofficial Mayor of Karangahape Road, I’m continually inspired by the street’s resilient communities: owner-operators, residents, workers, and rough sleepers, who embody relational care, creativity, and indigenous-led resilience. My practice is grounded in Parihakatanga: peaceful resistance, visionary leadership, and deep commitment to place-based, community-driven change. I bring a kaupapa Māori lens to my work, championing indigenous knowledge, collective care, and cultural celebration. I believe transformation is possible when we honour our stories, ground our actions in culture, and work together. These are the values I will carry to the board table.
As a social activator & long-time community advocate, I'm standing for the Waitematā Local Board because I believe in a community where wellbeing, creativity, and connection are at the heart of how we grow and live together. Kia ora I'm Grayson: self proclaimed Mayor of Karangahape Road, small business owner, resident of the CBD & one who resisted the exodus abroad! I believe in the power of community led solutions that reimagine what a thriving, inclusive & people-first city could feel like!
If elected to the Waitematā Local Board, I will bring a proven ability to connect people, spark collaboration, and turn ideas into action. I bring with me my lived experience, experience in governance/previous board experience, but most importantly Strategic Thinking with a Grassroots Lens. I can see the big picture while staying grounded in the day-to-day experiences of our communities. I know how to navigate systems & advocate effectively for change at local levels feeding through to policy.
Our local businesses are the lifeblood of our neighbourhoods. Lets revitalise our high streets, support small business resilience, and ensure that economic development is fair, future-focused, and inclusive of both innovation and community. Our Precinct is rich in creativity, diverse histories. We need greater investment in local arts, support for cultural events, & the protection of heritage spaces that connect us to our past and inspire our future. I support SAFETY not additional security!
Ultimately, transport isn’t just about getting from A to B—it’s about how we connect as a community, how we care for our environment, and how we shape a liveable, future-ready city. I support a shift away from car dominance where possible, but ensure equity for those who still rely on vehicles—like tradespeople, carers, and delivery drivers. We need integrated transport planning that connects walking, cycling, and public transport effectively.
Auckland's water system is under pressure—but with leadership, innovation, and community involvement, we can protect our harbour, reduce flood risk, and ensure clean, safe water for future generations in Waitematā.
Development must be matched with investment in infrastructure—including transport, stormwater, schools, parks, and libraries. Im all for HIGH Density done well! We need to advocate for better coordination between developers, Auckland Council, and agencies like Watercare to avoid overloading existing systems. Support a climate-resilient approach to infrastructure: flood protection, green building design, and energy efficiency.
Waitematā may be an urban hub, but we are also home to some of Auckland’s most cherished green spaces and coastlines—from Western Park to the Domain, Judges Bay to Point Erin. As development intensifies, protecting and enhancing our natural environment is not optional—it’s essential for our health, biodiversity, and climate future. I see the incredible regenerative mahi Iwi & partnership models are having all throughout Tāmaki once again creative collaborative approaches to the shared challenges
Renew key assets, make them accessible and welcoming is important. Continued support for cultural, youth, and neighbourhood-led initiatives should be integral. Engagement & trust is fundamental to connected communities whereby board decisions are transparent, inclusive, and community are informed. Target resources allow us to equitably meet needs where they are needed the greatest.
I believe economic growth should uplift communities, not displace them. To support local businesses and entrepreneurs, we need to Advocate for more affordable, accessible spaces for creatives, startups, and social enterprises. Push for active support of small and locally owned businesses through funding, visibility, and inclusive procurement. Champion the revitalisation of main streets and public spaces to draw people back into our neighbourhoods and the city centre — through events, placemaking
