Candidate for Whau Local Board
Independent
Kia ora e te whānau, My name is Almo Wong, and I am a proud Chinese Kiwi with deep roots in the Whau community. I grew up here, attending Blockhouse Bay Primary and Intermediate, followed by Avondale College. Professionally, I’ve worked as an electrical engineer, project manager, and policy maker. I’m a good listener and a practical problem solver. I’m passionate about giving back to the community. I’ve previously volunteered with the ambulance service in New Lynn, and I currently serve as a Justice of the Peace at the New Lynn Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). I’m standing for the Whau Local Board because I want to help our community continue to thrive and ensure that future generations can enjoy the same strong, supportive upbringing that I was fortunate to have. Let’s make Whau the best community in Auckland! Kia kaha, Almo Wong
I am running because I care deeply about our people. I want to ensure a bright future for our youth growing up in the Whau community. We can achieve this by empowering our local schools and businesses to thrive and invest in our neighbourhood. I also believe that no one should be left behind—that’s why I support initiatives that assist those experiencing poverty or homelessness.
I have a proven track record of working with diverse backgrounds and cultures to achieve meaningful results. I'm a people-focused leader who listens and takes action on the issues that truly matter. My background in electrical engineering, project management, and policymaking has equipped me with a broad skillset, making me a practical, budget-conscious problem solver. I'm committed to being an honest and transparent voice for our community.
Creating Opportunities for Youth - Our community holds untapped potential, especially among Māori and Pasifika youth. I support publicly funded programmes to keep youth engaged. Empowering Schools and Businesses - I am committed to reducing vandalism and crime while encouraging local businesses to support community events that bring people together. Addressing Poverty and Homelessness - We must maintain public amenities and connect people from lower socioeconomic groups to support services.
I will advocate for more frequent feeder bus services and better connections to train stations, especially in underserved areas. New Lynn should be the hub that provides reliable, affordable transit options. I will also ensure Auckland Transport engages meaningfully with our board and residents before making changes. Local voices must shape local transport decisions.
Local water assets should be managed locally. I will ensure Whau’s voice is heard in regional and national decisions about drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services. Transparency and local accountability must be non-negotiable. I will advocate for continued investment in systems that can handle growth and climate impacts. Push for upgrades that reduce flooding and prevent pollution.
Growth must be matched with investment in the three waters system, transport links, and community facilities. I will work to ensure infrastructure planning is proactive—not reactive. Public spaces should foster connection. I advocate for more pedestrian-friendly streets, vibrant town centers, and inclusive design that reflects the area's heritage.
I will champion initiatives to improve water quality in the Whau River and Manukau Harbour. This includes supporting wetland restoration, stormwater upgrades, and community-led cleanups. I advocate for better recycling infrastructure, organic waste recovery, and public education to reduce landfill use and plastic pollution.
I will advocate for community hubs, libraries, and parks that are welcoming to all—young and old, newcomers and long-time residents. These spaces should reflect our cultural diversity and be accessible to people of all abilities. I will work to increase funding and resources for grassroots organisations, youth programmes, and cultural groups. These are the lifeblood of our community, and they deserve consistent support.
I will work with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and local associations to strengthen small businesses, attract new investment, and promote shopping local. Initiatives like night markets, pop-up shops, and business expos will help energise our town centres. I support partnerships with schools, community groups, and employers to create apprenticeships, internships, and job pathways for young people. Economic development must include our next generation.
I will ensure Māori youth have access to the same opportunities, resources as any other young person. I support keeping the Port of Auckland as a strategic public asset, delivering dividends to Aucklanders while protected from short-term political interference. I support the Auckland Future Fund as a long-term investment vehicle to reduce reliance on rates and build financial resilience. I support continued funding for Storm Recovery Navigators, who help residents access support and rebuild.
