Candidate for Whau Local Board
Labour
Kia ora, I’m RJ Thomson. I’m a proud māmā of three daughters and kuia to three mokopuna. I’m standing for the Whau Local Board because I’ve lived the hardship many still face - homelessness, struggle, and the search for dignity. Today, I lead the Whau Homeless Network, using lived experience to amplify the voices of the unheard. I Co-ordinate the Glenavon Community Hub, serve on the New Windsor Community Hub Governance board, and I'm the Māori Chair Representative for the Kai West Collective - advocating for affordable, nutritious kai for every whānau. As costs rise, too many are being left behind. I’ll advocate for housing equity, rangatahi-focused initiatives, food security, and stronger local outreach. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata. The greatest thing in this world is people. Whau Labour stands for bold, compassionate leadership - because our community deserves nothing less.
If elected, I will work to build a stronger, more connected Whau where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued. I’ll advocate for safer streets, better access to essential services, and vibrant community spaces that celebrate our cultures and bring people together. I’m committed to supporting our seniors, families, and young people—and I’ll stand alongside those doing it tough, including rough sleepers and vulnerable whānau, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and hope
I bring trusted leadership, deep community roots, and a proven ability to broker strategic partnerships that uplift whānau, kāumātua and Taiohi. I offer inclusive decision making, cultural insight, and practical problem solving. I'm reliable, empathetic and committed to strong advocacy- ensuring our board reflects the strength, diversity and aspirations of the Whau.
I'm driven to find solutions regarding housing equity, kai sovereignty, and community Hauora. Everyone deserves a safe home and safer communities, nourishing kai and spaces where everyone is valued. I've dedicated many years supporting Whānau, kaumātua, Tamariki and Rangatahi and restoring Mana through connection and community. My mahi in the Whau is grounded by Hauora through Te Whare Tapa Whā and the well being of our people.
My top priority is to create a community transportation system that truly serves everyone, supporting all modes of travel. I’m committed to making our roads safer and more efficient while ensuring reliable public transportation is accessible to all. Cycling and walking are vital, so I plan to support the improvement of our paths and streets to promote active lifestyles. Together, we can enhance road safety by refining designs, boosting signage and lighting.
Auckland’s water must be managed with kaitiakitanga and long-term care. We need clean, resilient supply systems, restored waterways, and smart stormwater design that prevents flooding. Wastewater must be treated safely, with infrastructure that protects our awa and moana. I support community-led monitoring, rainwater harvesting, and investment in green solutions that honour te taiao and ensure safe, sustainable water for future generations.
Auckland's growth must be inclusive, climate-smart, and culturally grounded. I support quality housing near transport, green infrastructure, and protection of heritage and wāhi tapu. Development should reflect mana whenua values, uplift communities, and avoid displacement. Infrastructure must match growth, with investment in clean water, transport and social services that honour te taio and local identity.
To protect and enhance Auckland's natural spaces, biodiversity and climate resilience, I support restoring native ecosystems, expanding urban ngahere, and investing in nature-based solutions. We must safeguard wetlands, our coastlines and ecological corridors, while empowering co-design, community-led kaitiakitanga. Climate-ready design solutions, pest control and green solution infrastructure are key to a thriving, connected environment that honours te taio and our future generations.
My plan focuses on building strong, connected communities through collaboration with our Hubs, houses and service providers. By creating forums for open communication and inclusivity, I aim to create a sense of belonging for all residents. Improving local facilities is essential; enhancing parks, community centres, and recreational spaces will provide vital resources for social interaction and wellness (Hauora) activities. Mental, physical, spiritual and Whānau.
My vision is to build a vibrant economy where local businesses thrive and cultural heritage flourishes. By supporting small enterprises, we can drive innovation, create jobs, and ensure fair competition. Empowering local artisans and entrepreneurs will showcase our cultural identity and attract tourism and investment. Collaboration among businesses, community organizations, and government will help create a sustainable model that benefits all.
I am committed to achieving positive outcomes for Māori by honouring Te Tiriti as a living covenant and ensuring that Mana Motuhake is upheld. Through the Whau Resilience Network, I aim to empower community leaders in their essential efforts to prepare for future natural disasters. Together, we will enhance our resilience, promote collaboration, and ensure that our cultural heritage remains a priority. By working together, we can build a safer and more sustainable future for our communities.
