About by-elections

We hold by-elections to fill elected positions that have become vacant.

If a Governing Body or a local board member resigns or dies before their term ends, and it is more than 12 months before the next local election, a by-election will be held within the relevant ward or local board area to replace that member. If it is less than 12 months, the Governing Body or relevant local board votes on whether to leave the seat vacant or appoint someone directly.
