'Meet the candidates' events
'Meet the candidates' events help voters:
- meet and hear from candidates
- learn where they stand on issues affecting our city and daily lives
- make informed decisions when voting in this year’s local elections.
Who can run an event
There are no specific rules around who can organise and run 'Meet the candidates' events. In past elections, these events have been organised by:
- community groups
- resident and ratepayer associations
- universities
- iwi
- marae
- youth councils
- individuals and groups across Tāmaki Makaurau.
For the first time this year, Auckland Council is running a series of 'Meet the candidates' events for all local board and ward candidates. These events will be held online and recordings will be available on this website.
Running a successful event
The best time to hold a 'Meet the candidates' event is between 8 August and 25 September, after candidate announcements and while voting is under way.
Things to consider:
- ensure your venue is accessible to wheelchair users and people with limited mobility
- make sure your event is safe and welcoming to all involved
- consider hosting your event online, using platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams
- once confirmed, you can advertise your event for free on the OurAuckland website
- check your venue’s maximum capacity
- invite all candidates in your local board or ward to ensure equal opportunity
- for question ideas, check the pre-election report, available on this website from July.
