Candidate for Albert-Eden Local Board (Maungawhau Subdivision)
C&R - Communities and Residents
I'm seeking a third term on the Albert-Eden Local Board, where I've had the privilege of serving for six years, including as Chair. My husband and I have lived here for over 25 years, raising our two children in a community we care deeply about. A proud alumni of ANI, Epsom Girls', and the University of Auckland (BSc), I bring leadership experience from my time at Parenting Place, where I developed strong skills in managing people, budgets, and resources. I believe in turning up, listening well, and working collaboratively. I'm practical, pragmatic, and committed to getting things done; from supporting flood-affected residents to protecting open space and character areas amid growth. I've stood up for local businesses, backed a balanced transport approach, and helped support Eden Park's financial sustainability. Albert-Eden deserves thoughtful, community-focused leadership, not top-down decisions. I'd be honoured to continue serving our neighbourhood. Vote Kendyl Smith and C&R.
Albert-Eden has been my home for most of my life, and I care deeply about our community. As Chair for the past 18 months and a Board member for 6 years, I’ve worked to make our area safe, healthy, and connected. I believe Local Boards should put people before politics, focusing on practical, affordable solutions that last. I’d love the chance to keep building on what we’ve achieved together and to keep representing your voices.
I bring strong people skills—listening, connecting, and building consensus on tough issues. As the only candidate seeking a third term, I offer valuable experience, insight, and relationships to get things done. With a background in the for-purpose sector, I’m prudent, practical, and skilled in managing people, resources, and tight budgets to deliver real results for our community.
1.Well-planned neighbourhoods that protect heritage and special character, provide green spaces, and meet housing needs. 2. A balanced transport approach with sensible solutions for public transport, bikes, cars, and parking. 3. Keep rates as low as practicable while investing in long-term infrastructure, guided by community priorities.
I support a balanced approach for buses, cars, bikes, and pedestrians, and practical parking—especially outside local shops off-peak. We need consistent rules for speed limits and bus/T2/T3 lanes across Auckland. I’m cautious about congestion charging; it must avoid disadvantaging our community or causing rat running, while still helping fund the roads and footpaths we need.
Water is essential for life and must remain clean, safe, and accessible to all. I support strategic long-term projects like the Central Interceptor to improve water quality at our beaches. We must also manage stormwater effectively, with regular catchment pit cleaning to reduce flooding and protect our communities.
Auckland’s growth must be sequenced with infrastructure in place—open spaces, community facilities, sports fields, and libraries. I support well-designed high-density housing where it makes sense, while better protecting special character and heritage areas. We must safeguard green spaces from imposed intensification and secure greater central government funding to support development.
Support local environmental groups to strengthen investment and community ownership. Expand Pest Free Auckland and boost funding to tackle pests locally. Make recycling easier, crack down on illegal dumping, and increase fines. Protect and plant trees to absorb carbon. Advance public transport where possible, and enhance built and natural environments to reduce emissions more quickly and cost-effectively.
Encourage participation in sports and clubs to boost social cohesion and resilience. Balance growth with green spaces for play, exercise, and nature. Partner with and invest in community and regional sports organisations to grow sport from the grassroots. Support a diverse range of events for all communities. Foster neighbourly connections to strengthen safety and wellbeing.
Support business associations and improvement districts to make town centres vibrant and inviting. Enable parking for local businesses outside rush hour to help them thrive and ensure access for families, elderly, and people with disabilities. Back events like the Moon Festival on Dominion Rd that celebrate diverse cultures, foster understanding, and boost local business.
I support the Auckland Future Fund to grow assets and benefit ratepayers. Flood recovery in Albert-Eden needs regular street sweeping, pit cleaning, and improved soakage. As Māori (Te Ātiawa), I value Māori outcomes as I do for all our community in Albert Eden. Council services should prioritise residents and businesses, and engage hard-to-reach communities, including busy families, to deliver for all.
