Candidate for Devonport-Takapuna Local Board
A Fresh Approach
A passionate community advocate, author, life coach and two-time breast cancer survivor, I have dedicated my working life to strengthening community and advocating for others. A dedicated philanthropist, I have initiated the fundraiser Paddle For Hope, and the PaddleOn Cancer rehabilitation programme. Formally educated in Political Science, Communications and Psychology, I bring a blend of skill in strategy, policy development, change management, and public-facing leadership. I strongly believe governance boards should act with professionalism and high integrity, demonstrating a willingness to collaborate and make fact-based decisions for the well being of the community. I care deeply about our youth mental health, our natural environment, the health of our oceans and waterways and will support funding to deliver events and initiatives that bring people together, helping our town centres to prosper and connecting people to places. Give six ticks to A Fresh Approach for a positive, future-focused and relevant Local Board.
I am committed to protecting our beaches and coastline, supporting youth activities and mental health and ensuring informed, inclusive decisions on public transport, roads and local businesses matters. I will advocate for community led solutions and promote connection, sustainability, healthy living and growth.
I bring experience in communication, coaching, event management, philanthropy and sales. As a mindset coach, public speaker, a mum and community leader I empower people through resilience and purpose. I co-founded charity events and a cancer rehabilitation program, focus on inclusive and informed decisions. I am a team player who understands problem solving. I am passionate about our beautiful coastline, and a long time paddle boarder I value our oceans and lakes.
My top priorities for Devonport-Takapuna are: 1. Inclusive community events that reflect our area's diversity and strengthen local connection; 2. More opportunities for youth through education, mentorship, and creativity; 3. Local businesses - Support local business growth, Hurstmere Rd for example, and promote our suburbs as a destination so our town centres thrive and attract more visitors including improving public transport and accessibility.
Improving local transport is essential for accessibility. I believe we need more frequent , and reliable public transport options. Bus stations should be sheltered and safe. Better links between suburbs and safe pathways for walking, cycling, and mobility access will reduce congestion, support local businesses, and create a more connected community , all this while keeping our beautiful natural coastline and environment in mind.
I would explore upgrade stormwater and sewage systems to prevent pollution, especially during heavy rain. Separating wastewater from stormwater in older areas is key to protecting our beaches and streams. Reduce sewage overflow. Community monitoring and nature-based solutions like rain gardens can also help keep our waterways clean. Clean water is vital for our health, environment, and local identity.
I believe in thoughtful urban growth that respects and utilises our existing natural and community assets, especially our beautiful coastline and views. By enhancing access to these unique features, we can attract more visitors and create vibrant live-work spaces that support local businesses and residents alike. Smart planning should also address practical needs like parking solutions and congestion, ensuring growth benefits everyone while preserving Devonport–Takapuna’s charm and character.
Protecting our natural habitat is essential for preserving biodiversity and community wellbeing. We should do our best to prevent pollution, manage development appropriately, and support conservation efforts to keep our beaches, parks, and green spaces healthy. Promoting sustainable practices and educating the community will help ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from our unique environment.
I will grow and support our community by fostering inclusive connections that bring people together across all ages and backgrounds. Drawing on my experience as a mindset coach, advocate, and workshop / events facilitator, I will create opportunities for open dialogue, learning, and public events. By organising workshops, sports and water events, and partnerships, I aim to empower individuals, build resilience, and promote mental and wellbeing, strengthening the community from the inside out.
Sustainable economic growth must uplift local business and jobs while protecting our heritage—like Devonport’s historic charm for example. Promoting arts, culture, and sport strengthens our diverse identity. Prioritising development that respects local values will ensure our suburbs remain a thriving, inclusive destination to live, work, and visit.
With Māori heritage in my family (children), I understand the value of Te Ao Māori. I support co-designing local projects with mana whenua, protecting sacred sites like Rāhopara Pā , and restoring waterways. I believe in fostering open dialogue and collaboration across all cultures to strengthen shared understanding. Supporting cultural education in schools, libraries, and the wider community leads to more authentic, inclusive outcomes and long-term wellbeing for all.
