Candidate for Devonport-Takapuna Local Board
A Fresh Approach
A vocal community advocate, and project manager with Access Matters Aotearoa, I bring a unique lens to local decision making, having raised a child with acute needs requiring the use of a powerchair. His experience has taught me how vital accessible, safe and inclusive spaces are. When done well, they work for everyone. This will be particularly important as the Local Board designs the new Takapuna Library. In my professional life I have supported the development of accessibility legislation and advise Auckland Council on universal design. Accustomed to working alongside government and key decision makers, I am an experienced advocate for the needs of others. A keen cyclist and walker, I will champion multi-modal transport improvements that inclusively connect people to place. A proud local, I look forward to bringing my lived experience, collaborative approach and community-first ethos to the Local Board. Give six ticks A Fresh Approach.
I’m standing for the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to help create a community where everyone can participate fully. As a long-time local and mother to a son who uses a powerchair, I understand the need for accessible transport, safe walking/cycling links, and inclusive public spaces. I’ll bring practical, people-focused solutions that protect our environment, strengthen connections, and ensure decisions work for all ages and abilities.
I bring lived experience, strategic advocacy, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. As a project manager with Access Matters Aotearoa and adviser to Auckland Council’s Universal Design Forum, I work to make environments accessible for all. I’m skilled in community engagement, communication, and building partnerships, with a track record of turning ideas into practical, inclusive outcomes that benefit the whole community.
1. Accessible and regular public transport and spaces – I’ve seen how barriers exclude people; I want all residents to move freely and feel included. 2. Safe walking/cycling links – The Esmonde–Francis Link and Lake Rd upgrades will connect communities and improve daily life. 3. Protecting our coast – Our 26km coastline and Hauraki Gulf are treasures I’m committed to restoring and preserving for future generations.
I will push for investment to fix Lake Road bottlenecks, improve public transport efficiency and accessibility, and expand active travel options. Ferries must be accessible, timely, and part of a seamless network with buses. Making public transport affordable, frequent, and faster than driving will encourage uptake, reduce congestion, and lower emissions. We need safe, connected choices for everyone.
We must invest in resilient water infrastructure to cope with growth and climate impacts. Upgrading stormwater systems will reduce flooding and protect our coastlines. Wastewater must be managed to prevent pollution of the Hauraki Gulf. Our drinking water supply needs long-term planning to ensure it is safe, reliable, and sustainable for future generations. Healthy waterways mean healthy communities.
I support smart intensification to prevent urban sprawl, but we must design and build for all ages and abilities using Universal Design principles. Too many new townhouses are inaccessible, locking people with disabilities out of central locations and essential services. We need planning rules and incentives that ensure new housing is inclusive, future-proof, and connected to transport, green space, and community facilities, while protecting our unique heritage and character.
I’m committed to protecting Devonport-Takapuna’s 26km of coastline and native biodiversity through habitat restoration and pest control. We must invest in green infrastructure to manage stormwater, reduce flooding, and build climate resilience. At the same time, our natural environments should be designed inclusively, ensuring parks, trails, and reserves are accessible and welcoming for people of all ages and abilities. Protecting nature supports wellbeing and a sustainable future for all.
I’ll work to create inclusive, accessible spaces and services that connect our community. By advocating for accessible playgrounds, transport, and community centres, I’ll ensure all voices, especially disabled, youth, and older residents, are heard. Supporting wellbeing through nature, active lifestyles, and social connection will build a stronger, caring Devonport-Takapuna for everyone.
I want to support local businesses by promoting investment that creates jobs and reflects Devonport-Takapuna’s diverse community, including immigrants. Boosting growth means fostering accessible, inclusive spaces where everyone can participate. I’m passionate about celebrating our rich cultural heritage, Māori, settler, and immigrant histories through public spaces and events that build community pride and connection.
I will work closely with mana whenua to ensure Māori perspectives shape our local projects and protect cultural heritage. Sustainable management of the Port of Auckland must balance growth with environmental care. I support growing the Auckland Future Fund to finance climate resilience and effective storm recovery, protecting our Devonport-Takapuna coastlines and communities for the future.
