Candidate for Devonport-Takapuna Local Board
C&R - Communities and Residents
Bayswater has been my family home for over 30 years. My wife and I raised our three children here and I’ve proudly given back to the community that’s given us much. I’ve spent 12 years on Takapuna Grammar Board and helped lead major school upgrades and coached North Shore Rugby for three decades to keep young people active. Professionally I bring 35 years of leadership in aged care, mental health and hospitality, also serving on local governance boards and charitable trusts. Standing for the Local Board because I care deeply about Devonport Takapuna area future. With tighter council budgets, we need experienced voices who can deliver practical cost-effective improvements. I will advocate for better footpaths, safer streets, upgraded stormwater systems accessible beaches, restored recycling services and stronger support for sports clubs. I am running to champion local priorities with commonsense and accountability. Vote Mike Single and all your C&R candidates.
I am part of a C&R North Shore team. I aim to focus on improving delivery of services to the community and advocate for more effective and efficient use of Council resources. The key focus will be supporting Sport and cultural clubs with a focus on youth sport ,the growth of women's sport We need to create safer community, fix the storm water deficit advocate for the environment enhancement. The backdrop are budget cuts ($460,000 pa.)
I am a qualified Accountant with over 40 years' experience as a Company Director and investor in the Aged Care, Mantal Health and Tourism (Hospitality) and Commercial Property sector. This required working with a range of Government Departments and working in a highly regulated business environment My twelve years on the Takapuna Grammar Board, oversaw the redevelopment of the school and securing funding of over $50m. The business skills will be needed at the Devonport Takapuna Local Board
Support Sporting and cultural clubs The redevelopment of Bayswater Park, Alan Hill , conversion of bowling club to changing rooms and building shake parks across the area. Fix the stormwater shortfall I support the plan that retains 18 holes at Takapuna Golf and completing stage 2&3 as priorities (taking the storm water to the sea) Focus on improving local roads, footpaths seawalls, much currently in average condition. Advocate for a coordinated approach to projects Do it once do it well
DTLB needs to address the state of footpaths provide secure park and ride options supporting Ferry and Bus connections. We need to develop cycleways that connect our community and encourage cycling in a safe environment. The cycleways should be of the roads and we should develop current tracks through parks and around the shore front. We need to develop mitigation of Lake Road (due to recent development there is no "solution"We to redesign the drainage issues created by sped humps.
There is a substantial shortfall in Storm water collection not just Milford and Wairau . The Takapuna Golf Club needs to retain 18 holes and stage 2&3 of the plan moved forward to remove the water to the sea. The intensification of housing needs significant upgrades of stormwater as permeable land disappears We need to revise the tree planting program as the leaves are blocking drains causing flooding. The right type of trees more SW capture and enhanced water access are a priority.
The intensification has lead to poor quality developments ,badly built. We need to have quality developments with appropriate car parking , not poorly designed boxes. There is a need to protect heritage , once lost ,never recovered. We need to combine development with maintaining the heritage look . The future maintains the character . We need to improve the roading access and cycling options to support intensification. We need upgraded water and stormwater, much improved design.
We need to support the Local environment groups to run pest control programs, tree planting (not under power lines) ,grow the stormwater collection to prevent damage from flooding. We need to recognize that trees and planting in the right locations enhances environment. We need to fight against illegal dumping with technologies and penalties. We need a return of recycling bins in Devonport . We need to encourage private planting and pest control. We need to maintain our parks, beaches, drains.
We need to support the redevelopment of the Takapuna Boating Club and retention of the TGS Rowing Club at BWM .We need to support the redevelopment of the bowling club to women's facilities for rugby and cricket. We need to support NSF to redevelop BWP and Allan Hill grounds. We need to grow the cycle ways through our parks to connect t fully Milford to Devonport. There are a number of community facilities that support social connectivity. These must be supported and enhanced.
First and foremost we must support Council reducing rates increase to no more than the rate of inflation. Further we need more flexible planning rules(reform RMA) . We need to fund TBA, DBA,MBA and monitor progress of how they are enhancing the business community. We need to develop a much stronger connection to the preeminent Iwi Ngāti Whatuau . Recognizing that fact and working on a meaningful relatsionship enhances cultural heritage. Iwould embrace and promote NHC and sports teams from NH
Māori outcomes are a matter for Māori and work to achieve the desired outcomes .Port Of Auckland is not a Local Board issue Auckland Future Fund is not a Local Board issue
