Candidate for Franklin Local Board (Waiuku Subdivision)
Independent
As a decendant of Ngati te Ata Waiohua and Waikato Tainui, I have a longstanding connection to Franklin and am committed to serving our whole community. I have worked alongside churches, educational institutes, marae, health providers, environmental groups and local initiatives, and I value the strength that comes from diversity and collaboration. I am standing for the Franklin Local Board to ensure every voice is heard and local solutions are prioritised. My focus is on: Protecting and restoring our environment (taiao); Supporting the local skills and economic growth; Strengthening health and wellbeing services; Building inclusive, connected communities. I believe in kotahitanga, working together to create a Franklin where our environment thrives, our communities are resilient, and everyone feels they belong.
I want to ensure a Maaori voice is part of our local solutions, especially in how we care for the taiao (our natural environment). I’m passionate about community growth and unity, and believe that by working together we can shape a future that supports both people and the taiao in Waiuku.
My governance experience spans health, education, environment, business, and Maaori entities, supported by a strong connection as a Waiuku local. My strengths include strategic thinking, being approachable and community-focused, with a reputation for dependable leadership that values honesty, courage, and supports people-focused solutions that benefit everyone.
Protecting our taiao so it can sustain future generations, creating local jobs and career pathways for rangatahi and local families, and driving economic development to support a strong, vibrant community. These matter to me because a thriving environment, opportunities for our people, and a resilient economy are the foundation of a sustainable Waiuku.
Fixing and maintaining our roads is a top priority for the community, alongside reliable public transport options that connect Waiuku to the wider region. While walking and cycling options have a place, the immediate priority is ensuring safe, reliable roads and stronger public transport links to keep Waiuku connected and future-ready.
Clean water is essential for healthy living and it is a limited resource. Better education for efficient use for residential and industrial use should be encouraged with benefits. Those who can collect rain water should be able to do so even in urban areas. Stormwater and wastewater need stringent filtering systems before returning water to the natural environment.
Urban growth is important, but it must be balanced with sustaining the taiao. Housing and infrastructure development should be planned in ways that protect waterways, green spaces, and the character of our communities. Heritage sites hold deep cultural and historical value, and need stronger protection to ensure growth does not erase our past. A sustainable approach means development that supports people while caring for the environment and preserving what makes Auckland unique.
Protecting and enhancing natural spaces starts with working alongside local community groups and organisations who are already leading this mahi. Supporting their efforts with resources and strong partnerships will help restore biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and safeguard waterways, forests, and coastlines. Building community-led solutions ensures that local knowledge guides sustainable practices, creating a healthier environment for future generations.
