Candidate for Rodney Local Board (Northern Rodney Subdivision)
Independent
I'm running to make sure Rodney's communities have a real voice where decisions are made. With over 40+ years of proven service, I know how to get things done. I've chaired the Glenfield Community Board and Town Planning Committee, and was chairman of the Sandspit Residents and Ratepayers Association, working closely with Auckland Council to achieve results. Protecting what makes Rodney special drives me. I lead the Predator Free Sandspit Project and was a founding and current member of Restore Rodney East, supporting a strong network of local environment groups. I bring experience, action, and a commitment to community. Together, we can keep Rodney thriving - and ensure our voices are heard.
I’m running to help ensure North Rodney’s communities have a real voice where decisions are made. As the North Rodney Ward Representative, what I can do is help ensure your voice is heard loud and clear, advocating strongly on behalf of our communities. For Example, Funding arts, events & youth programs; protecting waterways, wetlands & wildlife; advocating for Rodney’s needs; managing parks, halls & facilities; and engaging with residents to ensure decisions reflect community priorities.
I have experience with local government and community groups. I like to see completion to solution of issues and projects, not just talk. I'm a strong supporter of conservation and environmental projects. As a boatbuilder for many years, I have a knack for problem solving. I also learned a lot in my 25+ years in Business. Experienced Action Oriented and Community Focused
Work towards Predator Free status is important to me to help restore our native bird population, some of which are endangered. The forests of Rodney North are only a remnant of what we had 150 years ago and those are threatened by invasive weeds. More control is needed to restore for future generations. Restoration of wetlands and preservation of waterways is important to our region, to ensure cleaner and healthier waters.
I think that for all residents myself included that the Extraordinary Rate Increase for Rodney has hit us harder than other parts of the city. I will advocate for a cap on rates going forward and that the increased rates collected from Rodny rates are fairly apportioned to Rodney with proportionate increases to public transport, cycling, walking and other transport options. We are way behind other areas in the country in this respect and this needs to be done now.
In North Rodney there would be a large number of rural properties who are not dependent on reticulated water, stormwater and wastewater, being self sufficient Quality, safe water and efficient waste water treatment plants and stormwater in town centres like Wellsford are essential
Auckland Metro should be focused on Urban development that utilises public transport. The infra structure should be future proofed for future development. The biggest problem in Rodney is that the increased building of housing is about 20 years behind the infrastructure required, This is not good planning. Development should be delayed until the Infrastructure is in place. Protection of Heritage site is essential in any society and we need to insist on the same.
Predator and Weed control needs to be stepped up to a higher level in our public spaces and roadsides. Biodiversity should be supported at every opportunity. With climate resilience we need to look at areas that may be threatened by Flooding ,we have 8 major catchments in Rodney. Seawater incursion on low level built environments will need to be addressed and remediated if possible.
I Would plan to build strong, connected communities and improve local services, facilities and community wellbeing by making myself available to residents at every opportunity, by attending community meetings and being available by phone, email and social media.
Strategic responses for the Rural Rodney Strategy builds on identified values and issues, setting imperatives for each rural area: protect productive land, maintain quality landscapes and environments, support strong communities, offer diverse lifestyle choices, and ensure well-managed utilities and recreation and promote our cultural heritage
Māori outcomes referring to initiatives and priorities aimed at supporting the wellbeing and aspirations of Māori communities in the rural Rodney area. These outcomes should be guided by the council's obligations and extensive engagement with Auckland's Māori communities. I Support this concept. Storm recovery as needed for example recent flooding in Puhoi, lessons can be leared from this on how to better predict and minimise impact on specific communities
