I moved to Papatoetoe in 2016 and built strong, lasting connections with local residents, businesses, and community organisations. While I no longer live in the suburb, I continue to maintain active ties through business and property interests and remain closely connected to the community’s everyday challenges and aspirations.
My professional background and governance experience, combined with my engagement with Te Ao Māori, have shaped my belief in partnership, respect, and shared responsibility. I value the contributions of Indian, Māori, Pacific, and long-standing local communities and believe Papatoetoe’s future depends on unity, trust, and inclusive leadership.

Dr Choudhary is a former Member of New Zealand Parliament (2002-2011). He is former Assoc. Professor of agricultural engineering and internationally recognised engineering scientist at Massey University for over 25 years. He was Member of Counties Manukau District Health Board (2016-2019). He has served as an elected Member of Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board (OPLB) 2016-2025.
Dr Choudhary advocates for wider community participation at both local and national level decision-making processes. He believes that Manukau should be transformed to become a prosperous multicultural hub of Auckland. He passionately believes in service delivery, economic well-being, and supports fair and equitable access to services for all our citizens.

Avinash Kaur Dhaliwal is a proud Papatoetoe local, mother of a teenager, Justice of the Peace, Marriage Celebrant, small business owner, and committed community volunteer. She holds a Commerce qualification and brings experience in administration, customer service, technical support, quality control, and small business management.
Avinash is an active member of the Sikh community, which supported thousands of people during COVID-19, Cyclone Gabrielle, and the Auckland floods through food distribution and community care. Her service is guided by the Sikh value of Seva (selfless service) and has been recognised with a Local Board Community Service Certificate.
In the 2026 by-election, Avinash is proud to stand as the only woman Labour candidate and the first ethnic woman Labour candidate for Papatoetoe. For over 42 years, my family and I have resided and operated businesses in Papatoetoe, which we call home. Our town has been a wonderful place to live and work, although its safety has deteriorated in recent times.
As Chairman of the Old Papatoetoe Business Association since 2015, I’ve been committed to improving safety, local economic development, and enhancing community-spirit through illuminating our town and organising events including the Papatoetoe Santa Parade, Old Papatoetoe Multicultural Festival, Diwali, Matariki, CNY, etc.
